Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Vow to grandfather behind Spain dream

Borussia Dortmund attacker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says the main reason he would like to play in Spain one day is to follow through on a promise he made to his grandfather.

Aubameyang, 26, who has scored 20 goals in all competitions this season, was watched by Barcelona sporting director Ariedo Braida during Dortmund's 3-1 win at Werder Bremen on Saturday.

The Gabon international signed a new contract with the German club in July, but he has always been open about his desire to play in La Liga at some point in the future.

In an interview broadcast on Telefoot on Sunday, he said his deceased grandfather is one of the main motivations behind that goal.

"I've signed a contract until 2020," Aubameyang said. "Like I've always said, I have a dream of playing in Spain.

"To explain it, it's simple. My grandfather died a year ago already. I made him a promise that I would one day play in Spain. He was a fan of Real Madrid.

"I really hope to play in Spain one day. But for the moment I'm at Dortmund and what's important is to concentrate on that."

Last month, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc played down talk of Barcelona's interest in Aubameyang.

And following the Bremen game, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said he was unperturbed that a top-ranking Barca official like Braida had watched the striker in person.

"I don't care that he was in the stadium," Watzke told Bild. "Everyone should be aware of Aubameyang's contract length."

Meanwhile, Aubameyang says he hopes to emulate Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona's Lionel Messi by regularly scoring back-to-back hat tricks.

The former St Etienne player managed such a feat last month when he followed up a triple in Dortmund's 3-1 Europa League victory over Qabala with another in the 5-1 thrashing of Augsburg in the Bundesliga.

"It's something that I really wanted to achieve -- to do what the very best do," he told Telefoot. "If you look at Ronaldo and Messi, they're able to score three goals in a game and the next match they score four.

"I want to become like that. I already moved up a level with Jurgen Klopp. But I'm in the process of doing so again with Thomas Tuchel, who's really given me freedom."
