Kevin Wimmer 'down on expectations' after struggle for Tottenham starts

Kevin Wimmer has said he is "down on expectations" after struggling to get minutes for Tottenham this season.

Wimmer, who made 21 appearances last season after joining from Cologne, signed a new five-year contract in July.

But a source close to Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino had told ESPN FC the club would listen to offers for the 23-year-old Austria international in the summer window.

Wimmer has since made only one appearance, in the EFL Cup, this season.

"After last season, where I played towards the end quite frequently, I'm already down on other expectations for this season," he told Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung.

The defender was Tottenham's only Euro 2016 representative to be included in the club's preseason trip to Australia.

But he missed the matches against Juventus and Atletico Madrid, and the subsequent friendly against Inter Milan, with a tight hamstring.

"That [the injury] has taken me back a bit. It is difficult at the moment, but I am patiently waiting for my chance. I try to always stay positive," he said.

"The feedback from the club is always that they are very happy; that they see the future with me. This is very positive, but it is about the here and now."

Spurs face a hectic schedule as they compete on four fronts, however, and Wimmer is hopeful he will get another chance soon.

"We will see what happens in the next few weeks, how much I start. We have a few midweek matches," he added.
