Tottenham close to deal to play UCL games at Wembley next term - source

Tottenham Hotspur have held positive talks with the Football Association (FA) about playing their Champions League home matches at Wembley next season, a source close to the negotiations has told ESPN FC.

Next season will be Tottenham's last at White Hart Lane and they plan to move into their new 61,000-seater capacity home at the start of the 2018-19 campaign.

In order to keep the project on schedule, Spurs could fast-track the removal of part of White Hart Lane's North Stand -- the Paxton Road end -- prompting chairman Daniel Levy to consider alternative venues for Champions League games.

Although no deal has been reached, the source told ESPN FC that the option of playing at Wembley was looking more likely than not, and discussions will intensify after Manchester United's 1-1 draw against Leicester on Sunday all but confirmed Spurs' return to the Champions League.

Levy, who is personally negotiating with the FA, is also close to agreeing a deal worth approximately £23 million per season to secure Wembley as a temporary home for the 2017-18 campaign -- with the option of a further year if the new stadium project hits unexpected delays.

Chelsea would also like to use Wembley as a temporary home while Stamford Bridge is being redeveloped but the Blues, who host Spurs on Monday evening, are someway behind their rivals in planning and have not entered formal talks with the FA.
