Fran Escriba named new Getafe coach

Fran Escriba had recently resigned as Elche boss.

Getafe have appointed Fran Escriba as their new coach on a three-year deal, the Primera Division club announced on Friday.

The 50-year-old Spaniard, who resigned from Elche this week after three years in charge, becomes Getafe's fourth manager since last summer, following on from Cosmin Contra, Quique Sanchez Flores and caretaker Pablo Franco.

A statement from Getafe read: "Getafe and Fran Escriba have today reached an agreement for the next three seasons. The coach will be unveiled to the media on Tuesday, June 30."

Cash-strapped Getafe began the 2014-15 campaign under Contra but he left during the winter transfer market to sign for Chinese side Guangzhou R & F.

The Madrid-based outfit appointed Sanchez Flores as Contra's replacement but the now Watford manager resigned in February after just seven weeks in charge, citing personal reasons.

Franco was promoted from the reserve team until the end of the campaign and helped Getafe maintain their Primera Division status. Getafe won 10 and lost 21 of their 38 games to finish 15th in the standings.

Escriba returns to Getafe 11 years after being assistant coach to Sanchez Flores during the 2004-05 campaign.

The Valencia-born tactician made his coaching debut at Elche three years ago and guided them to promotion into the top flight after a 25-year absence in his first season in charge.

Elche finished 16th in the 2013-14 campaign and although they ended last season in 13th place, they will play in the Segunda Division next term.

The Alicante-based outfit were punished with relegation by the Spanish Football League (LFP) for unpaid tax.
