Getafe coach Quique Sanchez Flores resigns after just 7 weeks in job

Getafe manager Quique Sanchez Flores has stepped down less than two months after taking over the Spanish club, saying his "decision was completely personal."

Sanchez Flores, 50, had only returned to the Madrid club he managed in the 2004-05 season on Jan. 5 following the resignation of Cosmin Contra, whose departure had also been sudden and he left to take a new role at Chinese club Guanghzou R&F.

Former Valencia, Benfica, Atletico Madrid boss Sanchez Flores made the announcement at an impromptu news conference on Thursday, saying: "I would like to communicate my decision to quit as Getafe coach.

"It is a personal decision that is a product of a vital reflection to not repeat situations that at the moment did not make me happy. It is the best decision and the best way to give dignity to my profession and respect myself.

"I would like to thank everyone, the sporting direction, my staff, club personnel and the media for having given me special affection since I arrived. I would especially like to thank my players who have had an exemplary commitment and behaviour, in their attitude, work ethic and love of their profession. I would also like to thank the fans. Thank you to Getafe for these two months that have made me feel like a coach with capital letters."

The former Atletico Madrid and Valencia coach did not elaborate further.

He inherited the team four points above the relegation zone, and he left it in the same spot. Through his second stint with Getafe, Sanchez Flores managed the club for 11 matches, seven La Liga and for Copa games for a record of four wins, one draw and six losses.

Getafe sit 13th in La Liga with 26 points, and on Saturday will face a Malaga side that beat Barcelona last weekend.
