Dani Alves agrees new two-year Barcelona contract

Dani Alves has signed a new two-year contract at Barcelona with an option for a third season.

Alves, whose previous deal was due to expire this month, had been linked with clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Manchester United.

Speaking after winning the Champions League on Saturday with victory over Juventus, the 32-year-old had talked up the possibility of a move to Milan.

His future had been up in the air for many months, and he had called a news conference last month to say he felt disrespected by the most recent new contract offer he had received, and had "both feet, his body and nearly all his head" out of the club.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu had said on Monday, though, that the club would not improve on its existing contract offer, and the Brazilian has now agreed to extend his stay.

A statement on the club's official website read: "FC Barcelona has announced that Dani Alves has accepted its proposal for the renewal of his contract, which expires on June 30 of this year.

"The new agreement binding both parties will be for a further two seasons, through to 30 June 2017, with the option of a third additional season."

The right-back posted on Instagram following the news of his renewal, writing: "Following my heart and that of those who love me."

The club confirmed later on Tuesday that Alves had signed the contract, and pictured him sahking hands with outgoing club president Josep Bartomeu.

Barca left-back Jordi Alba told reporters at Spain's training camp on Tuesday that he was happy to see his teammate commit.

"[Alves] is a great teammate and my friend, among the best professionals I have met in a dressing room over my career," Alba said. "I did not know very well what he was going to do, but I am very happy as he is a very important player for us."

Alves joined Barcelona from Sevilla in 2008 and has helped the club to five La Liga titles, as well as winning the Champions League and Copa del Rey three times apiece.

The doubts over his future had increased this week when Barcelona signed Aleix Vidal from Sevilla, who is capable of operating at right-back, even if he will not be able to represent the club until January due to Barcelona's transfer ban.

The news of Alves' new deal now raises questions over the futures of Barca's other current right-backs, Douglas -- who barely featured for the club last season after joining from Sao Paulo for €5.5 million last summer -- and Martin Montoya.
