Mauro Icardi discussed Atletico move but is happy at Inter Milan - agent

One of Mauro Icardi's representatives says the Inter Milan striker discussed a potential move to Atletico Madrid, but is adamant his client is happy to stay at the Serie A club.

Icardi, 22, is currently in negotiations over a new contract with the Nerazzurri after scoring 22 goals this season to finish level with Luca Toni at the top of the Serie A scoring charts.

Icardi's representative Letterio Pino says there is "just one knot to untie" before the striker signs a new Inter deal, but sees no reason why the Argentine would want to leave the San Siro despite the reported interest.

"He did have contact with Atletico Madrid, with Inter's consent," Pino told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "But he has always wanted to stay with Inter.

"Nothing has changed since the start of the season -- in fact their reciprocal love has only grown. Mauro loves these colours.

"There's just one knot to untie and we need to do things well, also because the player has a strong image.

"He has contracts with various sponsors and we're talking about him doing adverts wearing an Inter shirt."

Pino says there "won't be any release clause" inserted into Icardi's new deal with the striker having already turned down Diego Simeone's La Liga side.

Icardi said of his prospective contract with Inter: "Everybody wants to play in Europe, but I'm happy here with Inter. I hope we can keep getting better and the club are working on building an even more competitive squad next season.

"I've always said that I want to stay with Inter. My contract renewal's not so straightforward, but we are working on it and I'm confident. I think there will be more news in the coming week.

"Hopefully we will reach a point where we can sign and all be more relaxed about things. We will sort it all out soon, at the latest after the holidays."
