Mauro Icardi confident of signing new Inter Milan contract

Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi is set to sign a new contract with the Nerazzurri after finishing the season top of the Serie A scoring charts.

Icardi, 22, ended his first season at the club with 22 goals, the same number as Hellas Verona veteran Luca Toni, and he hopes many more will follow at Inter.

The Argentine says he is not going to be tempted to leave just because Inter have missed out on a place in Europe next season.

"Everybody wants to play in Europe, but I'm happy here with Inter," Icardi told Sky Sport Italia. "I hope we can keep getting better and the club are working on building an even more competitive squad next season.

"I've always said that I want to stay with Inter. My contract renewal's not so straightforward, but we are working on it and I'm confident. I think there will be more news in the coming week.

"Hopefully we will reach a point where we can sign and all be more relaxed about things. We will sort it all out soon, at the latest after the holidays."

Icardi's hopes of seeing Inter strengthened next season are shared by Inter coach Roberto Mancini, who is confident his wishes will be accommodated.

"We certainly need to strengthen the side, but the president knows this," Mancini said. "The problem is the big players are already playing for big clubs and it's not so easy just to go and get them.

"We want to keep hold of our best players -- [Mateo] Kovacic, Icardi -- and then we need to see what our financial situation is like, but I think we need eight or nine new players."
