Manchester United target Nathaniel Clyne in Southampton talks - sources

Southampton officials have held talks with the representatives of defender Nathaniel Clyne over his future at the club and negotiations are ongoing, sources have told ESPN FC.

Clyne's current Southampton deal is due to expire in the summer of 2016 and he has been linked with a move to Manchester United for several months, with ESPN FC sources confirming in January that the Old Trafford club are interested in signing the 24-year-old defender.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman recently said that he was keen to have an answer from Clyne on his future plans early this week, after initially setting a 10-day deadline for the England full-back to agree to sign a new contract with the club.

"Of course, we like to know what he decides and then if he accepts this offer from the club," Koeman said last Thursday.

"We like to know it. I can give him some advice, but it's difficult. He has to make that decision. It's always with players who have one season left, we want to know it. With players who have one season left, we like to know. We think about the future of the club and the future of the team."

Southampton are keen to do all they can to keep Clyne at the club, with the prospect of playing European football next season and an improved contract offer now on the table as he weighs up his options.

Southampton and their manager Koeman are hopeful of avoiding another summer of transfer speculation surrounding their star players, with Morgan Schneiderlin another of their big names being linked with a move, as Arsenal are reported to be interested in the France international.

However, Koeman has admitted he may not be successful in retaining the services of all his players, accepting they may have "aspirations."

Koeman has, though, been assured that he will be handed the bulk of any transfer funds to reshape his squad ahead of next season, which could still see Southampton playing Europa League football despite a four-game winless run in the Premier League in the last few weeks.
