Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney said he did not "set foot in the wedding" at the hotel where he allegedly took part in late-night drinking while on England duty.
Rooney was reported by The Sun to have been up until the early hours at a wedding in The Grove hotel following England's 3-0 victory against Scotland, leading the forward to ''unreservedly'' apologise to interim boss Gareth Southgate, the Football Association and young fans.
But Rooney also hit out at media treatment towards him after Saturday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal, and answered his critics by opening the scoring in Thursday's 4-0 win over Feyenoord to become United's all-time top scorer in Europe, surpassing Ruud van Nistelrooy by moving on to 39 goals.
When asked if the goal was even sweeter because of what had happened off the field, Rooney told BT Sport: "All that's created by people like yourself asking questions, making a big deal out of nothing.
"I didn't set foot in the wedding and it's a shame to have to speak about it on nights like this."
As well as becoming United's top scorer in Europe, Rooney is now also just one goal off Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time record for the club, reaching 248 goals on Thursday.
"It's a great feeling to score goals and to score goals for this club, so I'm pleased," Rooney said. "I'm sure there's plenty more to come and I'm happy with the win as well as the goal.
"It was a good win. We're pleased we got four goals. I think the second goal killed the game, even though we were in control at 1-0. You never know what can happen.''
Summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan impressed on a rare start and he was pleased to be involved for United.
"It was a pleasure to play again, to start the game," he said. "I've tried to do my best and I think it's a very good result for the team. It's been very difficult watching the team from the side but you have to have passion and work hard to try and take your next chance.''
When asked if it was a new start for the midfielder, Mkhitaryan added: "I hope so, let's see.''
