Wayne Rooney breaks Manchester United's scoring record in Europe

Wayne Rooney became Manchester United's all-time leading scorer in Europe with a first-half goal their 4-0 defeat of Feyenoord in a Europa League group stage game on Thursday.

The former Everton man scored for the 39th time in continental competitions, when he chipped goalkeeper Brad Jones from inside the box after receiving a pass from Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 35th minute.

The goal places the England international one ahead of Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy in Europe and one shy of tying the club's all-time record tally of 249 goals in all competitions, held by Sir Bobby Charlton.

United manager Jose Mourinho described Rooney's feat as "amazing" -- but said that the achievement will be better if it helps them win the Europa League.

Mourinho told a news conference after the game: "It's an amazing achievement obviously and would be even better if he can help to bring the Europa League to the club.

"It's not the biggest competition obviously but it's one that Manchester United's history does not have. Let's try, let's push."
