Champions League qualification key to Liverpool transfer plans - Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that qualifying for the Champions League will help Liverpool attract better quality players in the summer transfer window.

The Reds boss had previously told English newspapers that he was "not interested" in any player that would only move to Anfield if the club were guaranteed a spot in Europe's elite competition.

Klopp, however, clarified his position ahead of Liverpool's crunch match with Southampton on Sunday.

"I really forgot a lot of the things I said in the past!" Klopp told the Liverpool Echo.

"What I thought was that if Champions League is the only thing they're looking for then I can't [sign them]. I don't want him.

"But if it's part of whatever and the player has different options and the others play Champions League and we are the only club that doesn't -- it's all about if he's the right player.

"The better the players, the more other clubs want them and we cannot go for players saying only that Liverpool is a wonderful city. There are a few other things you have to bring in.

"We are in good talks and we'll see what happens but it would help to qualify, that's for sure."

Liverpool currently seat in the box seat for a top-four position that will guarantee them Champions League football. The Reds hold a four-point advantage over rivals Manchester United in fifth position, although Jose Mourinho's men do have a game in hand.
