LIVERPOOL, England -- Jurgen Klopp bemoaned Liverpool's lack of end product in Monday night's 0-0 draw with Manchester United despite having the majority of possession at Anfield.
Jose Mourinho's team successfully set out to frustrate Liverpool by employing a compact formation that restricted the home side to very few clear-cut chances in the tight Premier League encounter.
United goalkeeper David De Gea denied Liverpool on two occasions with world-class saves in the second half. In the 59th minute, the Spaniard got a strong hand on Emre Can's low shot before he acrobatically tipped Philippe Coutinho's long-range effort around the post.
The result snapped Liverpool's four-game winning streak in the Premier League and speaking at a news conference afterwards, Klopp said his side should have made the most of their 65 percent of possession.
"The game from the very first second was very hectic and it was maybe a little bit what Man United wanted," Klopp said. "We didn't want it, so it was more for their advantage than for our advantage.
"But that can happen at the start because you have not all this influence on the start -- that's how it is. But then you have to find the way you usually want to play.
"We lost patience much too early, that's the first problem and our passing game was then not good anymore.
"We had 65 percent possession, but we have to do better things when you have the ball so often. But I didn't expect before the game that we will have 10 or 15 chances."
The clean sheet was Liverpool's first of the season in the Premier League, and Klopp -- who earlier said "yippee" when asked about the feat by Sky Sports -- took consolation in his side's defensive discipline.
"The second half maybe we would have deserved the win, but at the end a 0-0 draw," he said. "The best news tonight is that we have one more point than before and we have a clean sheet -- nothing else.
"We can do much better and we have to do much better. You have to learn in games like this when the opponent creates an atmosphere on the pitch like this. You need to stay cool. They wanted to chase us in one-on-one situations then you need calmer movements.
"[There was] a really, really good attitude from my side. They worked really hard, they tried everything, only with the wrong tools tonight."
On De Gea's saves, Klopp added: "That's how he plays when he plays against Liverpool! Last year when we played here it was similar. He obviously loves games against Liverpool -- not too bad."
Manchester-based referee Anthony Taylor was a controversial appointment for the fiercely-contested fixture, but the Reds boss thought Taylor had a good performance on the whole in difficult circumstances.
"Before the game I think a lot of people spoke about the referee but nobody asked about him, so that's the biggest compliment for the referee," Klopp added.
"I can't remember any harsh situations. Football is a contact sport, sometimes things happen."
