Joe Allen relaxed over Liverpool contract extension talks

Joe Allen says he is relaxed about his Liverpool future as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract.

Allen, 26, joined Liverpool from Swansea City in 2012 after the appointment of Brendan Rodgers but the midfielder admitted in January that his future was uncertain, with contract talks not having resumed following the appointment of Jurgen Klopp in October.

More recently, Klopp has praised Allen as "a great player" and told his team before Sunday's 2-0 victory over Watford that he would like them to "play 'Joe Allen football' -- brilliant technique, hard-working, very lively, very energetic."

The Wales international, who has been linked with a return to Swansea this summer, has been told that talks over his future will only take place at the end of the season but he remains positive about the situation.

"I can't say there have been any changes on that," he told the Liverpool Echo. "The manager has said that between now and the end of the season it's not the right time to talk about those things. I think that works out well for everyone."

On Klopp's comments before the Watford game, he added: "It was a nice compliment from the manager. It's always a boost when you hear things like that, but he'll have to explain what he means by that!"

He added: "My target is always to develop and improve as a player. In the past few months I've had more game time and that's been great for myself.

"It's helped build up my level of performances to a better standard."

Allen said he is hoping to convince Klopp he is worthy of a place in the side for the Europa League final, with the German having said he is keeping an open mind over his starting XI for the clash with Sevilla on May 18.

"When I had the chance to join this club, the ambition was to win silverware," he said. "I've come close so far. Now there's another opportunity to lift a trophy and it's an opportunity I can't wait for."
