Matias Almeyda won't return as Chivas manager

ESPN FC's Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez discuss whether Juan Carlos Osorio will include Giovani Dos Santos on his final 23-man roster.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Chivas manager Matias Almeyda will not continue with the Liga MX club, the Argentine confirmed to ESPN Mexico's Jose Maria Garrido on Thursday.

Speculation has been rife about Almeyda's future, following a tumultuous Chivas offseason without any major signings and with the club announcing a period of "financial consolidation."

Sporting director Francisco Gabriel de Anda said Almeyda hadn't been convinced by the club's offseason plans and various reports have suggested the club brought forward the start of the preseason without the manager's consent.

Almeyda joined Chivas in September 2015 when the club was still in relegation trouble and vowed to "awaken the giant."

The former River Plate and Lazio midfielder went on to lift the 2017 Clausura Liga MX title, win two Copa MXs, the Supercopa MX and the CONCACAF Champions League.

Chivas defeated Toronto FC in April to win the CCL and the right to represent the region in December's Club World Cup, but the run to lifting the trophy involved protests from players, who were unhappy about the lack of bonus payments.

Chivas players took to social media in the wake of the news that Almeyda is leaving the club to express their support for the coach.

"We are with you," read a message from defender Edwin Hernandez.

The manager has previously expressed a desire to manage the Mexican national team.
