Croatia's Interior Ministry warns of possible fan disruptions against Spain

Croatia's Interior Ministry has warned that some radical fans may be planning disruptions during Tuesday's European Championship game against Spain, with the aim to get the match suspended.

In a statement on its website, the ministry announced that it had intelligence that hooligans inside the Stade de Bordeaux could light flares and firecrackers, invade the pitch and display radical political symbols.

The Croatian police union also warned that fans may also attempt to attack the referee after the 30th minute, according to multiple reports.

The ministry said it informed French authorities of their information and sent four additional police officers to assist local law enforcement.

The police union has said these fans are the same who caused the incidents last Friday during the game against the Czech Republic in Saint-Etienne.

UEFA on Monday fined Croatia €100,000 for flares thrown on the pitch during the match against Czech Republic and ordered Croatia's football federation (HNS) not to sell tickets to fans identified by it and the Croatian authorities as hooligans. But that sanction was deferred until the end of the tournament.

Hardcore supporters of Croatian club Hajduk Split, suspected by the federation of throwing flares, threatened on Facebook to disrupt the game against Spain.

Friday's incident sparked outrage in the Balkan nation with President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic describing hooligans as "enemies of Croatia."

The Croatian government has said the identity of the perpetrators was known and they would be processed upon their return to Croatia.

Earlier on Tuesday, the HNS asked fans to steer clear of violence.

"We urge you to support Croatia towards success in a fair and correct way," said a federation statement. "Let's say no to discrimination, racism and violence."

The federation said if fans are confronted by hooliganism they should not respond with violence but leave security forces to handle the trouble.
