Griezmann hits four as Atleti rout Leganes; Valencia close on Real

Antoine Griezmann scored four times as second-placed Atletico Madrid closed the gap between them and La Liga Leaders Barcelona to four points with a 4-0 home thrashing of Leganes on Wednesday evening.

After Griezmann struck the crossbar and Gerard Gumbau did so at the other end, the France international slotted in the opener in the 26th minute, having been teed up by Koke.

Nine minutes later, he unleashed another excellent free kick, with this one finding the net, and he then completed his hat trick -- his second in two games -- in the 56th minute via a header.

Griezmann subsequently added a fourth in the 67th minute, connecting with a Diega Costa cross, as Atletico followed up Sunday's 5-2 win at Sevilla with another emphatic triumph.

Barcelona have the chance to go seven points clear of them again on Thursday when they face Las Palmas away.

Atletico are now 10 points clear of third-placed Real Madrid, who lost 1-0 at Espanyol on Tuesday.

Fourth-placed Valencia are a point behind Real after drawing 1-1 with Athletic Bilbao at San Mames.

Los Che were on course to leapfrog Zinedine Zidane's men until Oscar de Marcos brought Athletic level with a strike four minutes after the break.

The first half had seen Geoffrey Kondogbia give Valencia the lead with a fine strike in the 23rd minute, and veteran Athletic striker Aritz Aduriz then have a 36th-minute penalty saved by Neto, the spot-kick being given following Jeison Murillo's tackle on Markel Susaeta.

Sevilla bounced back from their heavy loss to Atletico as they won 1-0 at rock-bottom Malaga, with Joaquin Correa scoring in the 15th minute.

It was a fourth-successive loss for Malaga as their search for a first victory under Jose Gonzalez extended into a sixth game.

Sevilla are up a place to fifth, swapping positions with Villarreal, who lost 1-0 at Eibar. Kike notched the winner in the 16th minute.

Another side still winless under their new boss are Clarence Seedorf's 19th-placed Deportivo La Coruna after their 3-0 loss at Getafe.

In what was Deportivo's fourth game with Seedorf in charge, Angel's 40th-minute opener was followed by an Eneko Boveda own-goal four minutes later, with Jorge Molina adding Getafe's third eight minutes from time.

Malaga and Deportivo are seven and two points adrift of safety, respectively.
