Manchester United's Marouane Fellaini set to stay at Old Trafford - sources

Marouane Fellaini is ready to stay at Manchester United, with sources telling ESPN FC that manager Jose Mourinho is reluctant to lose the Belgium midfielder during the January transfer window.

Fellaini, 29, has lost his starting place in recent weeks, having been a regular during the early stages of this season.

But despite dropping the former Everton player and reinstating Michael Carrick, Mourinho has retained him in his matchday squads and used him 17 times in 27 games so far.

While Inter Milan are prepared to offer Fellaini a move next month, Mourinho wants to retain him for the rest of the season due to his ability to play in various midfield roles.

Fellaini, a £27.5 million signing from Everton in August 2013, has endured a turbulent three years since being brought to United by David Moyes.

His unconvincing performances under Moyes led to him becoming a target for criticism from supporters, but he fought back to become a regular under Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho's arrival had been regarded as the end of the road for Fellaini, but the Portuguese has been impressed by the player's workrate and commitment.

Fellaini is out of contract at the end of the 2017-18 season, but sources close to the player have told ESPN FC he is relaxed about his future and prepared to wait until next summer before assessing his options.

But Mourinho is prepared to sell Morgan Schneiderlin next month, with Everton and West Bromwich Albion both keen to sign the France midfielder.
