Man United's England stars to travel but won't play in China

Manchester United's England players are set to be rested during the club's tour of China, although all three of them will travel there, manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed.

Wayne Rooney, Marcus Rashford and Chris Smalling are the players who have been involved with England and will subsequently miss the tour games against Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City at the end of July.

In an interview with MUTV, Mourinho said: "I'll take them but I'm not going to play them."

The United manager will use the preseason programme to involve the likes of Axel Tuanzebe and Tyrell Warren, with the first game being away against Wigan Athletic on July 16.

Promoting youth will help the Portuguese dispel criticism that he has not done enough to develop academy players in his career.

He added: "I don't know them well but I just trust [academy head] Nicky Butt, [head of football development] John Murtough and the structure's judgement, when they say that we have a few players who, in a couple of years, can be first-team players."

Mourinho also confirmed that, although he has started office work at United, the on-field preseason training will begin on Thursday.
