Louis van Gaal: Anthony Martial can cope with Man United pressure

Louis van Gaal has praised Anthony Martial for coping with the pressure of being the most expensive teenager in the history of world football and Manchester United's costliest ever striker.

Martial, 19, has begun his United career with four goals in as many games since he sealed his £36 million move from Monaco at the end of the transfer window.

Even manager Van Gaal admitted the Frenchman's transfer fee was "ridiculous" but the teenager has cast aside talk about his price tag to deliver on the pitch.

"As a player, he has to cope with the pressure," Van Gaal told a news conference. "From what we have seen up to now, he can do it.

And while Van Gaal thinks Martial, who has scored four goals in four games, has benefited from fortune, he feels his class is the biggest reason for his flying start.

"That is also a little bit of luck but the main thing is his quality," the Dutchman explained. "And also because of his fellow players. Also the moment he can play because Liverpool has to come [on the attack] and his qualities are stronger then."

Martial could become the first United player to score in his first three Premier League games but Van Gaal does not expect him to be aware of the chance to make history.

He added: "I don't think his fellow players shall say: 'You can break a record.' He is an open guy, he is listening and focusing on the matches. He is a very coachable player. I like him."

Van Gaal reminded everyone that it is early days in Martial's United career and believes he faces a new challenge when he finds somewhere to live.

"He is in the first phase of his adaptation," he said. "We have to wait and see when he settles in a house or an apartment. [Then] his wife is alone with his kid and then he is coming back and maybe he has to do shopping or something.

"Now he is still only living in a hotel and coming to a training session. That is more or less the same rhythm he has at Monaco, except he is living in a hotel. The big step is when he settles himself into a new house."

Van Gaal also said he would wait until December to decide whether to loan out young striker James Wilson, who is yet to make a first-team appearance this season and was not even on the bench for Wednesday's Capital One Cup win over Ipswich.

"I think he needs to play but Manchester United's interests are always higher than individual interests, so I have doubts to let him go," he added.

"And maybe we have to wait until December that we know how it is with our club, [if] we are succeeding in the Champions League, the Capital One Cup, because maybe he shall receive minutes off me because I have to rotate.

"You have seen what I have done against Ipswich Town. It can be done also in the other matches, so I have talked with him and I think that we wait until December."
