Bastian Schweinsteiger determined to win trophies at Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has said winning trophies at Old Trafford was his main motivation for leaving Bayern Munich, rather than reuniting with coach Louis van Gaal.

Schweinsteiger, 32, left his boyhood club Bayern this summer to seek a new challenge outside of Bundesliga after having won eight Bundesliga titles, seven DFB Pokals, and one Champions League and Club World Cup trophy.

His transfer to Old Trafford made the midfielder the first German to ever wear the Red Devils jersey.

"That's an absolute honour," the 2014 World Cup winner with Germany told Bild. "I didn't even know before making the move that no German has played here."

At United, Schweinsteiger has teamed up with his former Bayern coach Van Gaal, and it had been suggested that the former Netherlands coach was the main reason for his move to Old Trafford.

When you know how the coach ticks, and how he wants to play football, it makes the decision easier," Schweinsteiger said. "But for the main part I came to England because of the club Manchester United. That the coach fits well, is of course ideal," Schweinsteiger said.

Despite coming off the bench twice in the first two league games of the new season, Schweinsteiger believes that his experience could be crucial to help United achieve a new level, both in England and in Champions League.

He said: "It's not like I can say: I have signed for three years, now we'll win three straight titles. The Premier League is a very strong league. Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool all have a high quality.

"But those who know me also know that I always want to win titles. And I think that Manchester United are a club which can win titles."

United return to the Champions League this Tuesday when they host Club Brugge in the first leg of the playoffs.

"I am convinced that it is possible to usher in a new era at Manchester United- especially under Louis van Gaal," Schweinsteiger said.

"Just like when he took over at FC Bayern. That excites me. I can promise that I will give it my all and will try to help the club reach the level of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern once again."
