Manuel Pellegrini: Manchester City UCL win would show club is big

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said he needs to guide the club to Champions League glory if he is to be considered one of their great managers.

Pellegrini guided the club to the Premier League title and Capital One Cup in the 2013-14 season, but has so far been frustrated in his attempts to bring them European success.

As he prepared City to face Sevilla in Spain on Tuesday, he said the Champions League trophy would define both his and the club's status.

"It's always important to have a European title," Pellegrini told a news conference.

"There are a lot of reasons why you can be remembered as a good manager or bad manager -- winning titles or not winning titles -- but it's important to demonstrate that you are a big team and a big club.

"To do that, you must be able to win domestic cups and European cups."

He said he believed winning the Champions League was something supporters of any club would cherish.

"Maybe for a lot of fans, and not just Manchester City fans, the Premier League is more important," he added.

"But I think all the fans want and desire to win this title."

The City boss stressed, however, that he did not like to look too far into the future.

"It's not my personality to think about that sort of thing," he said. "I'm thinking about how this team can play better every game, and I'm sure we're going to win titles."
