Mario Mandzukic: Pep Guardiola didn't treat me with respect

Mario Mandzukic says he felt Pep Guardiola forced him out of Bayern Munich last season.

Mandzukic joined Bayern in summer 2012, and was a key player in the treble-winning team coached by Jupp Heynckes, scoring in the 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League final.

However, after Guardiola took charge that summer and changed the team's playing style, the Croatia international had a less important role.

Despite scoring 18 Bundesliga goals last season, there was no surprise when he completed a move to Atletico Madrid, having apparently turned down offers from England.

In an interview with Sportske Novosti, picked up by Mundo Deportivo, Mandzukic said that he now preferred to avoid any contact with his former boss.

"Guardiola disappointed me -- he did not treat me with respect," Mandzukic said. "He did not let me become the top scorer in the Bundesliga. For me things were twice as good when Jupp Heynckes was in charge.

"Would I sit down with [Guardiola] to have a cup of coffee? That is not going to happen. In my professional life I do not have to like everyone, but when I feel negative energy with someone I try and avoid that person."

Mandzukic, who scored 33 Bundesliga goals in 54 games for Bayern, added: "I did not deserve to be treated as I was, after giving everything for Bayern for two seasons.

"I felt that things changed for me as soon as [Guardiola] arrived. I made an effort to adapt, but it needs both sides to do something for that to happen. I realised that I had no future at Bayern, so I resigned myself to leaving the club and had to choose a new destination."

While the pair clashed at times during the campaign, the final straw for Mandzukic appears to have been not being included in the squad for the end-of-season DFB-Pokal final success against Borussia Dortmund despite being fit and having a chance to finish the term as Germany's top scorer.

"Guardiola took the decision to not play me in the DFB-Pokal final," he said. "He did not want me to win the trophy as top scorer, so he did not let me play during the end of the season. It was not really so important for me, but I felt it was a lack of respect towards me. It would have made much more sense if he had just told me I did not fit with his philosophy."
