Sokratis Papastathopoulos extends contract at Borussia Dortmund

Sokratis Papastathopoulos has extended his contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2019, the Westphalian club announced on Monday.

The Greek defender, who arrived from Werder Bremen in 2013, has made a total of 58 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund and a further 20 in European club competition and 10 in the DFB-Pokal, and has become a regular at the heart of the defence.

"We're really pleased that we've managed to tie down another of our key players in the long term with Sokratis' signing," said Dortmund's director of sport Michael Zorc on the Bundesliga club's website.

Papastathopoulos, who previously played for Genoa and AC Milan in Serie A, as well as AEK Athens and Volos in Greece, also expressed his delight at committing to the club for the next three and a half years.

"The city of Dortmund, the club and the people here have made this a second home for me and my family," said the 27-year-old.

"I'm really happy to be able to wear the black and yellow shirt for a long time to come."
