Philippe Mexes signs AC Milan contract extension

AC Milan have announced they have extended the contract of French defender Philippe Mexes by a year.

Mexes, 33, has been out of contract since the end of June and it was thought he did not figure in the plans of new coach Sinisa Mihajlovic.

However, the Serie A club announced via Twitter on Wednesday that he had put pen-to-paper on a new deal until 2016.

Mexes moved to Milan from Roma in 2011 and has made 107 appearances for the Rossoneri.

Last season, he played only 20 times in Serie A, making his first appearance under then coach Filippo Inzaghi only in November.

He also missed six matches last term due to suspension, four of those for punching Giorgio Chiellini during Milan's defeat to Juventus.
