Jay Rodriguez to stay at Southampton despite hopes of a move

Jay Rodriguez will stay at Southampton despite hoping the Saints would grant him a deadline day move.

The striker was keen on a loan switch which would allow him to play regular games after an injury-hit two years at St Mary's.

West Brom wanted to take him on loan while Sunderland, Hull and Watford were also in the race for his signature, sources tell Press Association Sport.

Southampton had been happy to let Rodriguez leave but after he scored in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Sunderland they changed their minds on Sunday.

Rodriguez had hoped to persuade them to let him move on loan before the deadline but boss Claude Puel has stuck to his guns and the England international will now look to force his way into the manager's starting XI.

Graziano Pelle joined Chinese club Shandong Luneng in the summer while Charlie Austin and Shane Long are the club's other senior forwards.

Former Burnley striker Rodriguez scored his first goal since March 2014 on Saturday after he suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament at Manchester City which kept him out for nearly 18 months.

The 27-year-old joined Southampton from the Clarets in 2012 and his form saw him make his England debut, which remains his only cap, in a 2-0 defeat to Chile at Wembley in November 2013.

He has scored 30 goals in 94 appearances for the Saints.
