Leganes consider adding Madrid to their name to attract sponsors

La Liga club Leganes are considering a name change to Leganes Madrid to help put them "on the map."

The outfit, based in the south of Madrid, known since their creation as Club Deportivo Leganes, are playing in Spain's top flight for the first time in their 88-year-old history.

The town of Leganes is 13 kilometres from the city of Madrid.

"We want to have our name on the map of the world so rather than being Leganes CD we want to be Leganes Madrid," Leganes owner Felipe Moreno told Sport360.com.

"We are in Madrid, a suburb of Madrid, and we want this to happen. It's about exposing the club to the outside world."

Since gaining a historic promotion to La Liga, Leganes have been working toward securing international partnerships. The club believe that adding Madrid to the name would make the club more attractive to sponsors.

Leganes did sign a deal last month with Saudi Arabian sports marketing company MBUZZ Sport to appear on the front of Leganes' shirts in the 2016-17 season.

Leganes, coached by Asier Garitano, play their home games at the 11,000-seat Butarque stadium, named after the town's patron, the Lady of Butarque.

Asked how fans would feel about the name change, Moreno said:

"I don't think we could ever change the name of Estadio Butarque.

"The whole city is named after Butarque and the fans would not like it. But the name of the club, it is just a minor adjustment that could make a big difference."

They have taken seven points from their opening six La Liga games and play away to Granada on Saturday.
