Manchester United's Marcus Rashford named in England under-21 squad

Marcus Rashford will not be in Sam Allardyce's first senior England squad after the forward was picked for the under-21 qualifier against Norway next week.

Rashford, 18, excelled in his breakthrough season at Old Trafford and forced his way into the England squad for the summer's European Championship in France.

However, despite impressing in his brief cameos at the international tournament, Rashford has failed to feature for his club side so far this season under new boss Jose Mourinho, which has contributed to his exclusion from the full England squad.

Allardcye had already hinted that the player's club travails might see him miss out on a place in the senior squad.

"Rashford is not playing now so it makes it harder for me to select him, as exciting as he was last year and how he burst on the scene," Allardyce said at his first media conference as England manager.

"At such a young age, do I say, 'Go and play in the U21s, get used to international football there, play regularly there and it will help you eventually, hopefully to break into the Manchester United team and then break into the England senior team'?

"You've got all those scenarios to consider."

Rashford will join a host of exciting attacking talent in Gareth Southgate's U21 squad, with Leicester City's Demarai Gray, Southampton's Nathan Redmond and Sunderland's Duncan Watmore also named in a talented 24-man group.
