Crucial wins for title rivals in Zimbabwe

Triangle's Guthrie Zhokinyi battles it out with Dynamos' Takunda Macheka Tinashe Makufa

Tawanda Macheka and captain Ocean Mushure scored either side of the break as Dynamos made a triumphant return to Rufaro Stadium with vital 2-1 win over Triangle in the Zimbabwe Premier League.

The former champions had made a mess of things on their midweek trip to FC Platinum, allowing the miners to come from behind and steal a 3-1 win with two quick goals in the final five minutes.

Dynamos fans must have feared a similar collapse on Sunday after Triangle's Lameck Nhamo cancelled out Macheke's ninth-minute opener with a fine strike just before the half-hour mark. But the Harare giants defended resolutely and there was to be no other result once Mushure had restored their lead with 15 minutes to go.

The victory allowed Dynamos to hold on to fourth place with 33 points, four behind Ngezi Platinum, who surged back to the top of the standings after overcoming an early setback to thrash relegation-haunted Hwange 4-1. Shepherd Gahadzikwa stunned Ngezi with a ninth-minute strike at the Baobab Stadium, but the miners responded swiftly with double scorer Godknows Murwira finding the leveller with s stunning effort direct from the corner flag.

The former Dynamos right-back then put Ngezi ahead on the half-hour, and two minutes later Terence Dzukamanja made it 3-1 with his third goal in two matches. Left-back Qadr Amin completed the rout moments after the break as Ngezi coasted to a second-consecutive victory to bring their points tally to 35, two clear of second-placed Platinum.

It proved to be an equally productive weekend for fellow title hopefuls Highlanders as they bounced back to form with a 2-0 win at 11th-placed Shabanie Mine. Godfrey Makaruse's fifth-minute lead calmed the nerves for Erol Akbay's men before veteran Ralph Matema wrapped up the win with a second ten minutes from time.

Meanwhile, Chapungu continued their steady climb up the standings after an impressive 3-0 win over the much-fancied Black Rhinos. The airmen needed only five minutes to seize the initiative courtesy of Phillip Marufu penalty, and further strikes from Allan Tavarwisa and mid-season acquisition Patrick Khumbula ensured victory for the Gweru-based outfit.

Chicken Inn midfielder Innocent Mucheneka scored his fifth goal of the campaign to power his team to a crucial 1-0 win over bogey side Bulawayo City. The 2015 champions remain neck-to-neck with second-placed Platinum, with the two sides tied on 35 points and also equal on goal-difference. Platinum are, however, on top by virtue of having scored a goal more.
