Zim PSL: CAPS, Platinum, Ngezi dominate matchday 14

FC Platinum of Zimbabwe FC Platinum

Log leaders Ngezi Platinum registered their eighth consecutive home win after dismissing Harare City 3-1 on Saturday, but second-placed FC Platinum proved equal to the challenge with a commendable 2-0 win at Chicken Inn 24 hours later.

Harare giants CAPS United were also among the matchday 14 victors, but it was Ngezi who got the ball rolling at the Baobab Stadium, making light of opponents who had been tipped to give them a tough examination.

City went into the encounter on the back of fine run which had seen them collect 13 points from the last possible 15 to rise from the lower rungs into fifth in the standings.

In addition, Mark Harrison's team had been producing some superb displays, but they proved no match for the marauding Ngezi, for whom Terrence Dzvukamanja and Kenneth Bulaji scored inside the first half-hour of an entertaining contest.

Dzvukamanja's strike was his eighth in 13 appearances this term, with the versatile 24-year-old profiting immensely from his new role as a false nine after spending much of last season wide on the right.

Winger James Ngulube scored Ngezi's third ten minutes into the second-half before Wilfred Muvirimi got Harare City's consolation 13 minutes from time.

Platinum, meanwhile, edged fourth-placed Chicken Inn 2-0 to remain three points behind Ngezi.

The champions had struggled somewhat before overcoming promoted Nichrut 1-0 during the midweek fixtures, but they needed just four minutes to open the scoring on Sunday, with star midfielder Rodwell Chinyengetere heading them into an early lead.

New boy Edwin Madhananga added a second just after the break, and there would be no way back into the contest for the hosts, who have struggled with inconsistency since the start of the campaign.

CAPS were the other giant who emerged from the weekend fixtures with all three points after a 2-1 win over Yadah FC.

Left-back Milton Ncube and forward John Zhuwawo scored either side of the break to put CAPS 2-0 up before Jimmy Dzingai halved the deficit for Yadah moments before the final whistle.

CAPS coach Lloyd Chitembwe must have been relieved to see his side post a second consecutive win to put a disastrous four-match winless run firmly behind them.

The former Warriors midfielder is still entertaining hopes of a second title in three seasons despite his team falling 15 points behind Ngezi.

Elsewhere, ailing giants Dynamos endured another frustrating afternoon after a dull goalless draw against promoted Herentals on a rain-washed Rufaro Stadium.

Just days after 1-1 draw against Black Rhinos had left interim coach Biggie Zuze half way through the exit door, the heavens conspired to make the poor Rufaro Stadium unplayable, and the two teams spent the afternoon tussling in the mud in a contest of little entertainment value.

There was no such misfortune for Triangle United, who took advantage of their trip to bottom-placed Mutare Rovers to end a barren run with a 2-1 win.

A return of four points from their last five matches had seen the Sugar Cane Farmers drifting south again in the standings, but veteran Lameck Nhamo halted the descent with a 70th-minute winner.

Former Chicken Inn midfielder Collin Duwa had put Triangle ahead just eight minutes after the break only for the hosts to pull level through a Brian Chinhoyi strike ten minutes later.

However, there was no avoiding an eighth defeat of the season for the newcomers, who have won just once in 14 matches.

There was a welcome win however for second-bottom Shabanie Mine, who beat visiting Bulawayo Chiefs 2-1 at Mandava Stadium.

Forward David Temwanjira thrust Shabanie into the lead with his seventh of the campaign just after the break, and Tinashe Mupumha doubled the advantage with 10 minutes to go.

There was still time for Chiefs to pull one back through Hamandishe Moyo, although it proved mere consolation as Shabanie held out for only their second win of the campaign.
