Midweek disaster for giants CAPS, Dynamos

Cape United players despair BackpagePix

Never Tigere scored on the stroke of full time to fire ZPC Kariba back to the top of the standings with a 2-1 win at home to CAPS United on Wednesday.

The unfashionable Mashonaland West side have now put together a commendable five match winning streak to underscore their resurgence as a force in the Zimbabwe Premiership.

Sunday Chidzambwa's team could even afford to miss a penalty, with CAPS goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda saving Raphael Manuvire's seventh minute effort.

The home side were soon in front though after gangling striker Francesco Zekumbawire easily converted following a quick exchange of passes involving youthful former CAPS forward Blessing Nyamuzihwa and Manuvire.

Tigere then struck the post as Kariba remained the more offensive side for much of the first-half.

CAPS levelled matters moments after the break with forward Abbas Amidu scoring his fourth of the campaign after being set up by midfielder Joel Ngodzo.

As CAPS thought they had done enough to preserve their unbeaten start to the campaign however, Tigere struck with a late free kick to ensure the Green Machine made the long trip back to Harare with little to show for their efforts.

Lloyd Chitembwe's troops must now pick themselves up ahead of next Wednesday's Champions League encounter at home to USM Alger of Algeria.

Meanwhile a Lot Chiunga strike at the start of the second-half was enough to condemn Dynamos to their third defeat in six matches in an evening match at the National Sports Stadium.

Chiunga capitalised on a poor back pass by the gaffe prone Zimbabwe international Elisha Muroiwa to beat Dynamos goalkeeper Tonderai Mateyaunga and hand the top-flight returnees a fifth win in eight matches.

Rhinos now sit second in the standings with 17 points, one behind leaders Kariba.

The result provided yet more evidence that giants Dynamos, now stranded in 14th place, look ill-equipped to cope in an increasing competitive league.

Exactly 24 hours earlier, Highlanders had endured their own midweek blues after slumping to a goalless draw away to struggling Harare City.

It is the second time that Bosso has failed to win against a struggling team after also being held to another goalless draw by bottom-placed Chapungu two weeks ago.

In another match played on Wednesday, Agrippa Murimba's 72nd minute strike was enough to hand FC Platinum a 1-0 win over Chicken Inn in Bulawayo.

The result represented a cruel blow for Chicken Inn, who had dominated play with Innocent Mucheneka, Clement Matawu and Louis Kutinyu all fluffing some good chances.
