England manager Sam Allardyce: We got victory we deserved in Slovakia

England manager Sam Allardyce said he was a happy man after Adam Lallana's 95th-minute goal brought a World Cup qualifying win in Slovakia.

Allardyce's reign as national team manager had appeared destined for a frustrating start, with Lallana having hit the post in a low-quality match that saw home defender Martin Skrtel sent off early in the second half.

But the Liverpool player saw his shot go through home goalkeeper Matus Kozacik with the scheduled four added minutes already up to win it for England.

And Allardyce told ITV Sport: "It was pretty nerve-wracking at the end, because the 10 men scenario meant we must win.

"We got what we deserved in the end, and won it in the last minute. We have dominated the game and got a very important win."

Scorer Lallana, whose strike was his first for his country, told ITV Sport: "That goal has been a long time coming. I put pressure on myself to score goals.

"We kept plugging away -- as a unit we played brilliantly and they didn't have any chances.

"Of course it's a great start for Sam and the team. He made it clear he wanted a clean sheet, and I thought we were very disciplined."

Captain Wayne Rooney, breaking the outfield caps record for an England player, said his side had refused to panic when a goal would not come, adding: "We stuck to our plan and we kept our shape, and Adam scored the goal to get us off to an excellent start."
