Costa decides on international future

Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa says he has already decided whether to declare his international allegiance to Spain or Brazil, but cannot yet make the choice public.

Duarte: Costa tug of war could sour relations

Brazil-born Costa received a Spanish passport last July, and he looked set to switch allegiance to the country in which he has played his club football for the last five years until an issue with paperwork held up the process ahead of Spain’s most recent World Cup qualifiers.

The Brazilian FA has reportedly tried to persuade the Atletico Madrid forward to change his mind and stick with the country of his birth, although Selecao manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has maintained that only he gets to choose the squad for each game.

Costa, though, revealed the matter has already been resolved.

“The decision is already taken,” Costa said. “I have spoken with those I needed to speak with. I do not have to speak [again] with [Spain coach Vicente] Del Bosque. Now we just have to wait. I cannot say publicly yet what I am going to do. I hope it is all resolved soon.”

Costa again showed just why two of the world’s top national sides want him to play for them by scoring twice in Atletico Madrid’s 3-0 Champions League win despite not being 100 percent fit due to an ankle problem.

The match at the Ernst Happel Stadium was Costa’s first ever in the competition, as he was suspended for the first two group games, and he said: “I was excited about making my debut in the Champions League.

“I am very happy with the debut, and for having been able to score and help the team. I was worried over the last few days with the injury, but the doctors made a huge effort, and I felt fine during the game. The team played a great game.”
