Wayne Rooney captaincy decision to wait for new England boss - source

No decision will be made on whether Wayne Rooney retains the England captaincy until after a new manager is appointed, a source has told ESPN FC.

Rooney has apologised to England interim manager Gareth Southgate and Football Association technical director Dan Ashworth for his behaviour after the Manchester United forward was photographed allegedly drinking late into the night at a wedding while on international duty.

The England striker said the images, taken over the weekend, were "inappropriate for someone in his position," with the Football Association revealing that it will be conducting a "proper investigation" into reports that members of England's backroom staff were with him at the wedding party.

Rooney has faced criticism over the incident and calls for him to step down as England captain, but a source told ESPN FC that his fate will not be decided until new manager is confirmed -- with Southgate the leading candidate for the position.

However, that may mean that the situation will not be resolved until England play their next game, against Germany, on March 22.
