Netherlands coach Danny Blind lamented his side's misfortune after seeing what would have been a stoppage-time winner from Bas Dost ruled out as their opening World Cup qualifier ended 1-1 in Sweden.
Blind has found himself under pressure to rebuild the squad following failure to qualify for Euro 2016, and saw his position under the spotlight again following last week's 2-1 loss against Greece in Eindhoven.
However, the Oranje produced enough to have come away from the Friends Arena on Tuesday with all three points, but failed to make their first-half dominance count and went behind to a well-taken goal by Marcus Berg.
Captain Wesley Sneijder fired Holland level on 67 minutes and substitute Dost fired a great chance over before seeing his close-range header ruled out by Italian referee Daniele Orsato for what looked the slightest of contact with the back of defender Victor Lindelof.
Blind said to Dutch broadcaster NOS: "Before that [disallowed Dost goal] we should have already decided the game ourselves. If you win this match 3-1 or 4-1, that is quite normal. We played a good game, but we gave a goal away ourselves.
"After this, you of course forget to reward yourself, and we were unfortunately not able to finish [the match off].''
Sneijder also felt Holland had done enough to take all three points.
"We did not have luck on our side, especially in the first half, when we were the better team,'' the Galatasaray midfielder said.
"I think the team deserves a compliment about how we have continued to play, but are we happy with the game? Well, we did not lose, but I would rather have more.''
