Lukaku lauds 'winning mentality'

Romelu Lukaku believes Belgium have developed a "winning mentality" after the striker's brace sealed World Cup qualification for Marc Wilmots' side.

Romelu Lukaku celebrates one of his two goals as Belgium won in Croatia to qualify for the World Cup finals.
Lukaku scored a first-half brace for Belgium.

Lukaku's first-half goals were enough to hand Belgium a 2-1 win over Croatia, giving them an unassailable lead in Group A with just one qualifying match remaining.

The 20-year-old was quick to deflect praise onto his team-mates and believes Wilmots has instilled a positive attitude in the Belgium dressing room heading into next year's tournament in Brazil.

"I'm not the match-winner, the team makes a difference. We played well," he told Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad. "The players and I can finally stamp our personality on the team, I am proud.

"The last quarter we were difficult [to break down] but two years ago we could still have lost here 2-1. Now we have shown that we have a winning mentality.

"On Tuesday we play at home in the last match [against Wales] but it is certainly not a meaningless match. We will do everything to win."

Wilmots was pleased with Belgium's performance but quickly turned his attention to Tuesday's final group match against Wales.

"We are happy but we will not be partying," the coach said. "We have had a moment in the locker room, but it is still too early for euphoria. "On Tuesday we have another game and I hope we also tackle it seriously. They played very maturely."
