Di Maria scores as Argentina top Chile; Ecuador still unbeaten; Colombia win

Angel Di Maria scored the opener as Argentina defeated Chile in Santiago.

Argentina held on to grab a gritty 2-1 victory over Chile in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying in Santiago on Thursday

Chile gave a raucous Estadio Nacional crowd something to celebrate in the 11th minute.

From a corner, Felipe Gutierrez powerfully placed Fabian Orellana's out-swinging cross into the bottom-right corner of Sergio Romero's net.

Angel Di Maria and Gabriel Mercado cancelled out Felipe Gutierrez's opener as Argentina got three crucial points in Santiago, Chile.

Argentina didn't take long to work an equaliser, however, with Angel Di Maria quieting the atmosphere on 20 minutes with a wonderful, right-footed curled shot into Claudio Bravo's far post after pouncing on a loose ball just inside the box.

The visitors added the winner just five minutes later. Lionel Messi found room near the six-yard box before lobbing back across goal for Gabriel Mercado, whose right-footed volley under duress snuck past Bravo and into the net.

The win gives Argentina eight points from five games, five point behind leaders Ecuador. While Copa America champs Chile remain on seven.

Dario Lezcano scored a pair of goals in Thursday's 2-2 draw.

Meanwhile, Ecuador remained unbeaten with help from a 90th-minute goal from substitute Angel Mena in a 2-2 draw with Paraguay in Quito.

Enner Valencia opened the scoring for the hosts in the 20th minute, before a pair of goals from Dario Lezcano on either side of half-time put the Paraguayans ahead.

The Ecuadorian's late pressure then paid off two minutes into stoppage time, when Christian Noboa's lobbed pass played in Mena, whose chip of an onrushing Justo Villar found the net moments before the referee's final whistle.

Ecuador sit top of the table on 13 points. Paraguay, who sit third, moved level on points with Argentina with eight.

Edwin Cardona's stoppage-time goal lifted Colombia over Bolivia in La Paz.

Edwin Cardona's stoppage-time goal powered Colombia to a 3-2 win over Bolivia.

Colombia had enjoyed a two-goal advantage after 41 minutes thanks to similar left-footed strikes from James Rodriguez and Carlos Bacca.

The hosts, though, wouldn't be held down in the altitude of La Paz, hitting back five minutes after the break through a Juan Arce penalty, and 12 minutes later from an unstoppable Alejandro Chumacero shot from outside the box.

But the Colombians would not be denied on the day, and it was Cardona who finished off a sweeping counter-attack with a well-placed finish into the bottom-right corner of Romel Quinonez's net.

The win gives Colombia seven points from five games, while the loss keeps Bolivia on three points.

Raul Ruidiaz scored in second-half stoppage time to salvage a 2-2 draw for Peru at home to Venezuela. A first-half penalty from Romulo Otero and Mikel Villanueva's 57th minute strike gave the visitors a 2-0 lead before Paolo Guerrero reduced the deficit in the 61st.

The goal from Guerrero tied him with Teofilo Cubillas as Peru's all-time leading goal scorer with 26.
