Mexico beats Honduras 2-0, U.S. settles for goalless draw with T&T

Mexico took goals from substitutes Jesus Corona and Jurgen Damm to earn a 2-0 CONCACAF World Cup qualifying win against Honduras in a sweltering Estadio Olimpico.

It was the second win in two tries for new Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio, as the Colombian used a slightly different starting formation than the 4-4-2 he employed in his team's win on Friday against El Salvador.

Osorio turned to his bench in the 60th minute, substituting Javier Aquino for Corona. The new Mexico manager was rewarded almost instantly when the 22-year-old turned in a brilliant individual effort and volleyed into the back of the Honduras net in the 67th minute.

Another substitute, Damm, paid immediate dividends after coming on in the 70th minute for Hernandez.

The Tigres winger picked up a ball on the right side of the Honduras penalty area and flashed towards goal. With Corona open in front of the goal, Damm instead chose to shoot, blasting a no-look effort in from six yards to double Mexico's lead.

Mexico have six points and sit atop Group A.

The United States and Trinidad and Tobago played to a 0-0 draw in Port-of-Spain, which puts both teams on four points following two Group C matches.

The U.S. was largely outplayed in the first 45 minutes, with T&T generating the better of the chances, but Jurgen Klinsmann's team did show signs of life in the second half.

Joevin Jones nearly gave T&T the lead in opening minute, when Kenwyne Jones played a diagonal ball back to him at the top of the U.S. penalty area, but the Chicago Fire player's attempt went over the crossbar.

The best two chances for the U.S. were both from long range. Fabian Johnson struck a nice line drive from 20 yards in the 19th minute, but the ball went right to goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams. Jozy Altidore's dipping volley a minute later went over the goal.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Altidore found strike partner Gyasi Zardes with a curling ball across goal, but the LA Galaxy player's headed attempt slammed off the crossbar.

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann went to his bench in the 68th minute, substituting defender Tim Ream for Portland Timbers' midfielder Darlington Nagbe. Bobby Wood came on for Zardes in the 75th minute.

Jermaine Jones saw his thunderous strike from 35 yards tipped just over the bar by Williams. The U.S. couldn't capitalize from the ensuing corner kick.

The U.S. resumes World Cup qualifying with a home-and-home series against Guatemala on Friday, March 25, and Tuesday, March 29.

Costa Rica remained at the top of Group B with a 2-1 win against Panama.

Bryan Ruiz scored in the 66th minute and teammate Marcos Urena added a second to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Luis Tejada cut the deficit in half for the hosts in the 71st minute, but Panama could not find the equaliser and remain in second place in the group.

After a hot start to qualifying last Friday night, Canada could only come away with a 0-0 draw from El Salvador.

Cyle Larin helped earn the Canadians three points at home in its opener versus Honduras, but the Salvadorans held strong against the visitors to emerge with a point.

Guatemala used goals from four different players -- two either side of halftime -- to beat St. Vincent and the Grenadines 4-0 in Group A qualifying.

Stefano Cincotta opened the scoring for the visitors in the 23rd minute and Minor Lopez added a second nine minutes later. Dennis Lopez and Gerson Tinoco made it official with a goal each in the second half to earn Guatemala a first three points in qualifying.

In Port-au-Prince, hosts Haiti were on the losing end of a 1-0 match with Jamaica.

Clayton Donaldson scored for the Reggae Boyz in the 62nd minute to help his team keep pace with Group B rivals Costa Rica and Panama.
