Aron Johannsson starts for U.S.

The United States will call on Aron Johannsson to start Friday's World Cup qualifier against Jamaica in Kansas City, Kan. (6 p.m. ET, ESPN, WatchESPN)

Johannsson will partner with Jozy Altidore at forward in a 4-4-2 formation.

Johannsson, 22, has been in fine form for Dutch club AZ Alkmaar this season with five league goals and eight in all competitions.

Johannsson was born in Mobile, Ala., but moved to his parents' native Iceland when he was 3 years old. FIFA approved his request to switch national teams in August, and he appeared briefly in the U.S.'s World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica earlier this month.

Johannsson and midfielder Mix Diskerud will each start a World Cup qualifier for the first time.

With the U.S. already assured of its seventh straight World Cup berth, coach Jurgen Klinsmann changed six starters from last month's clinching 2-0 win over Mexico.

Brad Evans is at right back, while Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron will make their first start together in central defense.

Evans missed the Mexico match with a strained calf muscle, and Altidore, Besler and Cameron served suspensions for yellow-card accumulation.

The full U.S. starting XI:

Goalkeeper: Tim Howard

Defenders: Brad Evans, Geoff Cameron, Matt Besler, DeMarcus Beasley

Midfielders: Jermaine Jones, Mix Diskerud, Alejandro Bedoya, Landon Donovan

Forwards: Aron Johannsson, Jozy Altidore
