El Tri coach won't pursue Carlos Vela
Calling the decision to not include Real Sociedad’s Carlos Vela "a closed case," El Tri coach Victor Manuel Vucetich said he left Vela off the team because Vela didn’t make a commitment.
"At the end of the day, he didn’t meet one of the two expectations I had, so automatically there is no case to speak of," Vucetich said. "We have spoken clearly from the beginning, we need committed people, especially at this moment."
On Friday, Vucetich included AC Ajaccio goalkeeper Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa in the recall for El Tri's World Cup qualifying matches next week, but Vela was left out.
Espanyol's Hector Moreno, Manchester United's Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and Villarreal's Giovani dos Santos and Javier Aquino were the other European league players included in Friday’s announcement.
"Playing with the national team is always demanding, we have to accept it for what it is,” Vucetich said.
Mexico sits fifth in the CONCACAF 2014 World Cup qualifying Hexagonal standings. El Tri hosts Panama on Oct. 11 before closing four days later in Costa Rica. Mexico will field its third coach in three Hex matches against Panama.
After the team's 2-1 Hex home loss to Honduras on Sept. 6, the team fired Jos Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre. Luis Fernando Tena, one of De la Torre's top assistants, took the post on an interim basis, but in his first game at the helm Mexico suffered a 2-0 loss to the Americans on Sept. 10, leaving Mexico on the brink of not qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1990.
Mexico hired Vucetich two days later.
Vela, a 24-year-old striker, has not played for the national team since March 29, 2011, for a friendly against Venezuela and reportedly turned down a call-up from de la Torre in August.
Vucetich said the injured Jonathan Orozco was evaluated by a specialist and was cleared by his club Monterrey and would be cleared to play for El Tri.
Meanwhile, Hector Moreno won't likely play in Espanyol’s match versus Elche due to a leg injury. Villarreal's Giovani dos Santos does not expect to be sideline Friday vs. Granada even though he sustained a finger fracture over the weekend.Information from ESPN Deportes was used in this report.
