Jozy Altidore cleared to play

U.S. team striker Jozy Altidore was cleared to resume workouts Wednesday after an MRI of his right hamstring showed no signs of serious injury, the U.S. soccer federation said.

The federation said via statement that coach Jurgen Klinsmann "is optimistic Altidore will be available for selection when the U.S. faces Costa Rica on Sept. 6 in San Jose." The United States resumes CONCACAF 2014 World Cup qualifying in the away match (ESPN Deportes Radio, 10 p.m.).

Sunderland held American striker Jozy Altidore out of Saturday's loss to Crystal Palace because of a hamstring injury.

The U.S., first in the final round of CONCACAF hexagon qualifying, takes on Mexico on Sept. 10 in Columbus (ESPN, WatchESPN, ESPN Deportes Radio, 8 p.m.)

The U.S. has won its past 12 matches and leads the CONCACAF group with 13 points from six Hexagonal qualifying matches. Klinsmann's team is coming off a recent Gold Cup championship victory.

Altidore is one of nine players on the U.S. roster carrying yellow cards whose next caution would result in a one-match suspension. The others are Matt Besler, Michael Bradley, Geoff Cameron, Brad Evans, Clint Dempsey, Tim Howard, Fabian Johnson and Jermaine Jones.

Altidore has scored in his last five matches for the United States. He has started in all six games of the Hexagonal qualifying, along with Bradly, Dempsey and Gonzalez.
