2018 World Cup qualifying - how it works

The qualifying process for the 2018 World Cup began on March 12, 2015 with preliminary ties between the 12 lowest-ranked nations in Asia.

Chiquito Do Carmo of Timor-Leste had the honour of scoring the very first goal on the road to Russia in a 4-1 victory at home to Mongolia.

There are 31 places up for grabs, joining hosts Russia.

PANAMA CITY, Panama -- United States manager Bruce Arena credited his side with earning "a good point on the road" in a 1-1 draw with Panama on Tuesday night.

The U.S took the lead through Clint Dempsey in the 39th minute after exceptional work on the right flank by Christian Pulisic. But Panama equalized just four minutes later with Gabriel Gomez firing home from a goalmouth scramble after the U.S. failed to deal with a long throw-in.

Mexico boss Osorio shaves head after losing qualifying bet with 'Chicharito'

Javier Hernandez and Mexico held on for a nervy 1-0 win against Trinidad and Tobago in World Cup qualifying.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago -- Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio was delighted in his postgame news conference after seeing his side defeat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 on Tuesday, although he didn't let on that he'd just lost a bet.

When Osorio appeared 10 minutes later in the mixed zone of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, he did so with slightly less hair.
