Ex-government official wins Gambia federation chief vote

DAKAR, Senegal -- A former government minister has been elected president of the Gambian football federation in a move that has been criticised as being about politics and not sport.

Lamin Kaba Bajo, a former interior minister, narrowly won Saturday's vote. Critics say some candidates were barred from standing.

The vote was held after FIFA dissolved the GFF board in April saying it had lost the confidence of "major stakeholders."

Another former government minister, Sidi Sanneh, said in a Facebook post that the election of government-backed candidate Kaba Bajo means football in the West African country is "no longer sport; it is pure politics." FIFA rules prohibit governments from interfering in football matters.

Gambia is serving a two-year ban after it was found guilty of fielding overage players in a youth tournament.
