Eto'o vital for Cameroon - Makoun | Moonda

Makoun talks up Eto'o importance

Jean Makoun has said that Samuel Eto'o remains Cameroon's "best asset" despite the Chelsea striker claiming his international teammates had plotted against him.

Moonda: Eto'o inspiration

Eto'o, 32, captained his nation in their 4-1 defeat of Tunisia on Sunday to secure their place at next summer's World Cup finals.

Just 24 hours previously during the prematch news conference, the former Barcelona and Inter Milan player stated that his fellow squad members had conspired to not pass to him during the goalless first leg of the playoff encounter.

However, Makoun, 30, who eased his country's passage to Brazil with their third and fourth goals in Yaounde, insisted that Eto'o had not shirked his responsibilities as the team's star player, despite his accusations.

"He was really into it. You saw him in training encouraging us, putting in the effort. When you see him like that, he who is our best asset, it pushes the others. All you can do is follow him," the Rennes midfielder told L'Equipe. "During the game, he ran a lot, he ran himself into the ground to enable his teammates to shine. He certainly didn't look to shine himself."

Since becoming surprise quarterfinalists at the 1990 World Cup, the Indomitable Lions have impressed on the global stage.

And Volker Finke's squad now have a seventh World Cup to look forward to -- a record for an African nation.

The experienced Makoun, however, is keen to temper the enthusiasm generated by qualification, particularly given Cameroon’s failure to reach the last two African Nations Cup tournaments

"We've had some disappointments recently. We've had a few problems, so we don't want to get carried away,” he said. “But if we stay together, united like that, I'm certain that we can match the big teams. We know what we still have to do."
