First home WC Qualifier win for Asia's smallest football nation Guam

Asia's smallest football nation Guam have tasted victory in their first ever home World Cup qualifier by defeating Turkmenistan 1-0 on Thursday.

Guam, a United States territory with a population of less than 200,000 in the North Pacific Ocean, opened their AFC Group D campaign with a spirited performance against a Central Asian side placed higher -- 173rd compared to 174th -- on the FIFA rankings.

The difference between the sides at the National Training Center in Hagatna was an own goal by Serdar Annaorazow after 17 minutes.

The match against Turkmenistan was Guam's first World Cup fixture since they were beaten 16-0 away by Tajikistan in 2000. Two days earlier they lost 19-0 in Iran.

Guam, who drew 2-2 away to Singapore in a friendly earlier this year, will host India on June 16 in their next World Cup qualifier.
