WC Qualifiers: Change of venues for Singapore's Group E games vs. Japan

Singapore's 2018 World Cup qualification game against Japan on June 16 has been moved from the city state to Saitama in Japan.

The return match in Group E between the two nations on Nov. 12 will now be hosted by Singapore.

The tweaking of the schedule means Bernd Stange's side face the daunting prospect of taking on four time Asian champions Japan on their home turf just five days after their first game, also an away match against Cambodia.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and world governing body FIFA took favourable action on the Football Association of Singapore's (FAS) request to change the venue so as to avoid a clash with the closing ceremony of the 28th SEA Games scheduled to be held in Singapore from June 5-16.

"We would like to thank FIFA, the AFC and JFA for agreeing to our request to play the June 16 match in Japan," said FAS President Zainudin Nordin.

"We look forward to hosting Japan on Nov. 12. This will be a major treat for all Singapore and Japan fans, and we are confident it will draw a strong crowd."

Singapore have been drawn with Cambodia, Afghanistan, Syria and Japan in Group E of the Asian World Cup qualifiers.
