McCarthy hints he may leave Wigan
James McCarthy has dropped a hint that he might leave Wigan in the summer.
Republic of Ireland international McCarthy, 22, is a reported target for Arsenal after impressing with his performances in the Wigan midfield this season.
The Latics have sold Antonio Valencia, Wilson Palacios, Charles N’Zogbia and Victor Moses on to bigger clubs in recent years and McCarthy could be the next man to leave the DW Stadium.
He told the Daily Mail: “Obviously, it’s good to see your name linked with big clubs. It’s always nice but I am still a Wigan player and I will keep playing for Wigan until the end of the season.
“I have been linked with clubs here and there but I will keep working hard and see what the end of the season brings.”
Wigan are 18th in the Premier League and have only won one of their last 12 games and McCarthy was asked what would happen if they are relegated.
“It’s down to the club and someone else,” he said. “I’m happy at the club and I’m positive we won't go down.”
Manager Roberto Martinez has long said he believes McCarthy has the ability to play for top clubs.
Speaking in December, he explained: “I think technically it is difficult to find a better player. James knows he needs another period of improvement, but from a technical point of view he can play in any team in the world and he will do one day.”
