Tony Popovic stands by charged Western Sydney Wanderers midfielder

Western Sydney Wanderers coach Tony Popovic is standing by Kearyn Baccus after the A-League midfielder was charged with common assault.

Baccus was on Wednesday charged over punching a 49-year-old man in the chest during an altercation in Arncliffe three weeks ago.

The Wanderers said they would allow the court process to develop however they have kept the 25-year-old available for selection for Saturday's match against the Brisbane Roar.

Speaking ahead of his team's training session in Blacktown on Friday, Popovic said the incident hadn't impacted the team's preparation for the Roar.

"He's available for selection, an important player in this squad. It's been dealt with. The club's made a statement. We certainly back the integrity of the player," he said.

"He's been dealt with. We're clearly focused on the game."

Baccus has enjoyed a breakout season over the 2016-17 summer, playing in 15 of the club's 17 games, and starting in their past three.

Popovic said the club had always been confident in the Sydney FC junior's ability.

"We feel he's maturing more and more as a footballer," he said.

"He's shown that in the last few appearances. He was very good against Sydney FC and I thought he improved again against Newcastle [Jets]. We're seeing really good signs from him.

"The ability's always been there. He's just needed some nurturing, some improvements. It's all slowly coming together for him. Hopefully that'll continue."

Baccus' will appear in court next month, clashing with the club's Asian Champions League fixture overseas.

Pending the court proceedings, he could also be reprimanded by Football Federation Australia his own club for bringing the game into disrepute.

Meanwhile, Popovic also confirmed the club is in talks with former Socceroo Ryan Griffiths and could land his signature as soon as this week.

The 35-year-old, who has twice enjoyed stints at Newcastle, had been playing with South China in the Hong Kong Premier League, scoring four goals in 14 appearances.

"We've had numerous discussions with players and Ryan's another one that we've had discussions with. We'll see in the next day or so whether anything comes of it," Popovic said.

The Wanderers are seventh on the competition table, equal on 18 points with sixth-placed Wellington Phoenix, with 11 games remaining in the regular season.
