Western Sydney have pulled off a major coup ahead of the W-League season, luring former Matildas midfielder Joanne Burgess out of retirement.
The 36-year-old will join the Wanderers, two years after playing her last games for the Matildas and the Brisbane Roar.
"After retiring from the Westfield W-League last time I always regretted not finishing up with my home team and where I grew up," explained Burgess.
"I grew up in Campbelltown and have played for Western Sydney teams almost my entire life so it's exciting to be representing my region on the national stage."
Burgess played 40 games for Australia, including in the 2006 Asian Cup and 2007 World Cup.
She played in four Grand Finals in her five seasons in the W-League, winning one in 2010-11 with the Roar.
"All my family are excited that I'm playing for the Wanderers as they're all Wanderers supporters," she said.
"I won't be able to wipe the smile off my face when I put on the Red & Black jersey. It's the Wanderers, I love the Wanderers and I'm a Wanderers girl."
