Western Sydney sign former La Liga midfielder Andreu Mayoral

The A-League's growing Spanish contingent has added another member with former La Liga midfielder Andreu Guerao Mayoral agreeing to join Western Sydney Wanderers for the 2015-16 season.

A product of the Barcelona youth system, Andreu spent 12 years with the Catalan giants and also appeared in the Spanish top flight with Sporting Gijon in 2007.

The 32-year-old has been with Racing Santander for the past two seasons where he helped the club earn promotion from the Segunda B and reached the quarterfinals of the 2013-14 Copa del Rey.

He has also played with teams in Poland and Georgia and appeared in the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup during a guest stint with New Zealand's Auckland City.

Western Sydney Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said the signing of the Spaniard was part of the regeneration process of the 2014 AFC Asian Champions League winners.

"Andreu has spent time at clubs such as Barcelona and Malaga and we're excited to add this sort of football pedigree to the playing squad," Tsatsimas told the club's official website.

"It is important to get players of the calibre of Andreu to add a significant backbone to our squad in the middle of the park."

After making the 2014 Grand Final and winning the AFC Champions League that same year, Western Sydney finished second last in the 2014-15 A-League season after the departure of ex-Japan international midfielder Shinji Ono.
